How to get a colour palette from an image
- Drop an image, for example a photo, a moodboard or a logo.
- Choose how many colours you want, from 4 to 8. The tool picks the colours that make up most of the image.
- Click a colour to copy its HEX value. Click the image to pick the exact colour of any pixel.
- Copy all values as text or as CSS variables, or download the palette as a PNG.
What you can do with a palette
- Build a brand palette from a photo or a mood image that fits your look.
- Match the colours of a post to the photo in it, so text and image belong together.
- Hand a client the colours as HEX values or CSS variables.
Choosing text colours from a palette
Check the contrast between text and background before you use two colours together. Body text needs a contrast ratio of at least 4.5 to 1 to be easy to read, and large headlines need at least 3 to 1. A dark colour from the palette on a very light one almost always works, two mid-tones next to each other rarely do.
What happens to your image?
Nothing leaves your device. Your browser reads the image and calculates the colours itself, so there is no upload and no server involved. You can check it yourself: open the network tab of your browser while you use the tool, and you will see no image request.

Drop the image into the tool above. It shows the main colours as swatches with HEX values, and you can click the image to pick any single pixel.

Is the tool free?
Yes. There is no signup, no watermark and no limit on how often you use it.
