Why Instagram needs JPG
iPhones save photos as HEIC by default. The format is compact, but many programs, websites and Windows computers cannot open it, and Instagram does not take it. A JPG opens everywhere, so convert HEIC photos before you upload them or send them to someone who does not use an iPhone.
Your photos are not uploaded
Most online converters send your photos to a server. This one does not. Your browser decodes the photos itself, using the same code that postd.ai uses in its editor. You can check it: open the network tab of your browser while you convert, and you will see no image request. The converted file also carries no location data, because the conversion writes a fresh image.
About colour and file size
Photos from an iPhone use a wide colour range. The converted file uses sRGB, which is what Instagram and most screens expect, so colours can shift very slightly. A JPG is usually larger than the HEIC it came from, because HEIC compresses better. Lower the quality or the longest side if you need smaller files.
