How to split an image for an Instagram carousel
- Drop your image into the tool. It suggests a number of slides that fits the shape of your image.
- Pick a slide format. 4:5 (1080 × 1350) uses the most space on screen, 1:1 (1080 × 1080) is the classic square.
- Choose Crop to fill to cut the image to the slides, or Fit whole image to keep all of it and add a background colour. Drag the preview to move the crop.
- Download all slides as a ZIP, or tap a single slide. On a phone, Share saves them straight to your photos.
- Upload the files to one Instagram carousel in order: 01, 02, 03 and so on.
4:5 or 1:1?
Both work for carousels. Instagram crops every slide to the ratio of the first one, so all slides should use the same format. 4:5 is taller and takes up more of the feed, which gives a panorama more height to work with. 1:1 is the safer choice if the same slides also go to other platforms. If you are unsure, start with 4:5.
How the profile grid mode works
Switch to Profile grid and choose the number of rows. The tool cuts your image into tiles and numbers them in posting order. Instagram shows your newest post at the top left, so tile 1 is the one at the bottom right. Post tile 1 first and work your way back to the top left, and the tiles assemble into one picture on your profile.
Tips for seams that look right
- Start with enough pixels. Each slide is 1080 px wide, so a 3-slide panorama wants an image at least 3240 px wide. Smaller images still work, but look softer.
- Keep faces, text and logos away from the cut lines. The dashed lines in the preview show exactly where the cuts fall.
- Pick PNG for graphics with sharp text and JPG for photos.
- Choose 2160 px width per slide if you plan to edit the slides further.
What happens to your image?
Nothing leaves your device. Your browser reads and cuts the image itself, so there is no upload and no server involved. That also makes it safe for unpublished client work. You can check it yourself: open the network tab of your browser while you use the tool, and you will see no image request.
FAQ
Is this carousel splitter really free?
Yes. There is no signup, no watermark and no limit on how often you use it.
How many slides can I make?
Between 2 and 10 slides in carousel mode, and up to 4 rows of 3 tiles in profile grid mode. Instagram itself allows up to 20 slides in one carousel.
What size are the exported slides?
1080 × 1350 px for 4:5 and 1080 × 1080 px for 1:1. The 2160 px option doubles both.
Why do my slides look misaligned on Instagram?
If slides are cut by hand at slightly different sizes, the seams shift. Every slide from this tool comes from the same image at the same size, so the cuts line up.
Can I use it on my phone?
Yes, it runs in a mobile browser. Where your browser supports it, Share saves all slides straight to your photos. Otherwise tap a single slide to download it.
